03.06.2011-Sunday-Rest Day

Rest Day Reflections…. information overload!

Yesterday was pretty cool… and as your Coach, I am very proud of our competitors, and our supporters.  Let's put yesterday's event into some perspective.  Without losing sight of your amazing athletic accomplishments, I am more impressed with your act of philanthropy.

10 of yesterday's competitors were original RedShed athletes (I am counting Kevin in there, since he started his CrossFit journey with us… I still consider him a ShedHead!).  That is a total of $450 of donations ($600 if you count the door money).

We may have each paid for the event as individuals…. but as an affiliate, we represented ourselves well in the community… as a community who cares!  That is something to hang your hat on!!

    DR. Severe-
Keep swirling around creative names for the spring challenge.
    Brendan and Kevin-
Thank you for giving a quick lesson on how to climb a rope. There’s nothing like being thrown into it and learning as you go!
It may be a few days before we get all the pics and videos uploaded. Thanks for those that are posted so far.
Since we are anti-FB, if you come across any great things on CF ACT’s FB page, please try to grab it, save it and post it here in a non-FB way.
    ENJOY YOUR REST DAY!

  25. I’m proud to be a ShedHead every day, but it was extra special yesterday. I couldn’t be there, but McCoy, Kat, and I were sharing updates and I was overwhelmed with feelings of how amazing the Shed and its atheletes are. I’m so proud of all of the competitors and coaches.
Thanks for the callout, CKL, but I am not a competitor. I hardly think I’m ready physically, but really, I just don’t have the head for it. I’d rather watch and cheer, while proudly wearing my Shed colors, of course.

  33. About to go dunk my hands in some salt…they are not too bad, but whether you rip skin on your hands big or small it needs to heal quicker than it probably will so you can wrap your hands around a bar again 🙂 How long do I need to wait for them to heal or do you get right back on it?
Now my left leg is a different story. Has one nice rope burn on the outside but somehow I managed quite a large bruise on the inside of my ankle. Must have been where the rope was but don’t even remember. And my inner thigh looks great with bruises too! I should take a picture of my hero wounds and post them. Kind of funny how I am pretty proud of having them!
Besides that none of my muscles are achy….. yet!

  41. Is Advil paleo?
Not sure what hurts more. Going up and down stairs or the open rope burn wounds in the shower. I don’t think I was this sore even after the Ego-Challenge. Hope it doesnt’ last too long.
Here is a link to a web album of the pics Janice took yesterday.

Thanks again Coach. As much pain as I’m in today, it is a good pain. Especially knowing it was for a good cause and most of the pain was caused by a Hero Wod.
    Proud to be a ShedHead.

Thanks again Coach. As much pain as I’m in today, it is a good pain. Especially knowing it was for a good cause and most of the pain was caused by a Hero Wod.
    Proud to be a ShedHead.

  45. Is Advil paleo?
Not sure what hurts more. Going up and down stairs or the open rope burn wounds in the shower. I don’t think I was this sore even after the Ego-Challenge. Hope it doesnt’ last too long.

  57. Well I can check off an item from my new years goal list already and it’s only March! My first competition and it was not so bad. I learned a lot as an athlete, in particular how not to row!!!
Had a great time yesterday being among fellow shedheads! Not to say I take things for granted when I come in everyday, but one can really see the impact of Pat and J9’s programming and overall leadership when interacting and or competing with other boxes. I was especially proud to be a part of the shed yesterday..;you guys are awesome.
Scott, gonna have to say that going down the stairs seems to be the biggest challenge.

  65. Pat and J9, for the spring event what would you say the difficulty is going to be for each obstacle? If the challenge gets increasingly difficult with each station, then I am really thinking a Dante’s Inferno type title will be banging…

  81. Brielle-
Although it hurts very much-a couple of rounds of pouring the salt right on the wound (this is scaling up) and letting it sit there for a few mins really helps speed the healing process. Modified option would be to place your hand in salt water. Time will tell when you are ready to get back on the bar. Shouldn’t be too long!
Thanks for posting the pics. Will have to view them a little later.

  89. Coconut curry shrimp and chicken
The original recipe was on the foodee website, but I added my own spin to it.
    Ingredients:
    Chicken Breast
    Shrimp (optional)
    1 can of Coconut Milk
    1 tbs Curry Powder
    1 tbs Ground cumin
    1 large yellow Onion
    1 large garlic
    Baby Carrots
    Celery
    Head of Cauliflower for rice
    Love
    Preparation:
Pending on how many people you are serving:
Cut 2-3 chicken breast into cubes then peel and de-vein the shrimp.
Season the chicken and shrimp to your liking- I have a cupboard full of seasonings, so I go all out…thyme, a little bit of adobo, garlic salt, fresh black pepper
Peel several garlic and set aside
Heat 2 tbs of coconut oil and sauté chicken, shrimp and onions together. Once chicken/shrimp are cooked, add garlic (don’t want to burn the garlic). I use about 6-7 cloves of fresh pressed garlic (again go with what you like).
Add one can of coconut milk (not the Goya brand), curry and ground cumin. Here is where I, again, go astray. I love curry, so I add it until I am content ( after stirring and tasting), of course. I am somewhat liberal with the cumin also, but not as I am with the curry. Again it is up to you.
Bring to a boil for about 10-15 minutes then add baby carrots and chopped celery and simmer on low heat for 20-30 minutes, thus allowing for the vegetables to cook and the curry to really seep into the meat and veggies—this is where I also deviate from the original recipe. Note, if you find the sauce to be too thick, cut it with a bit of vegetable or chicken broth—remember it’s coconut milk, so it will never be too watery.
When I am cheating, I put this over rice, otherwise, it goes great with cauliflower rice.
    Cauliflower rice:
Cut cauliflower into florets and place in food processor ( or a blender)
shred until the consistency of rice
put in microwave-safe bowl and cook until semi soft (4-5) minutes…make sure it does not turn into mush. No need to add water, cauliflower makes its own water.
    Serve and enjoy

  95. Coconut curry shrimp and chicken
The original recipe was on the foodee website, but I added my own spin to it.
    Ingredients:
    Chicken Breast
    Shrimp (optional)
    1 can of Coconut Milk
    1 tbs Curry Powder
    1 tbs Ground cumin
    1 large yellow Onion
    1 large garlic
    Baby Carrots
    Celery
    Head of Cauliflower for rice
    Love
    Preparation:
Pending on how many people you are serving:
Cut 2-3 chicken breast into cubes then peel and de-vein the shrimp.
Season the chicken and shrimp to your liking- I have a cupboard full of seasonings, so I go all out…thyme, a little bit of adobo, garlic salt, fresh black pepper
Peel several garlic and set aside

  97. Thanks all for the support and the shout outs! Another big difference I learned yesterday between Crossfit and any other sport competition, everyone in the room cheers you on no matter what team you represent and that is just awesome.
Shannon, I went into this competition knowing I wasn’t going to place in the top but wanted the experience and see how I can be pushed. Words can’t describe the feeling and I have to say you should experience it for yourself. You are good enough and who cares your final placing, you will probably get some PR’s!
ok, I have some ideas for names Summer Shredder or my favorite (play on the name) Red Shredder. Say it slow. I think it’s pretty cool.

Whats all the knocking on the sprouts?? DEEE-licious! You slice them with sweet onion shallots, bacon, a little olive or coconut oil, bake covered till theyre pretty tender, uncover for the last 15 min till the bacon is crisp – yum!!!! can add garlic, seasoning…they dont bother my stomach at all.
@RICH mmmmmmmmm adobo!!! chicken wings baked with ADOBO! unfortunately I like these baked in beer, tenderizes the meat and adds a fantastic flavor, once the beer evaporates you let them get crispy, good stuff!!! Of course, SOMEone has to finish the beer 😉

  113. Was looking at blog and just wanted everyone to know how honored I feel to train with all of you. We have such a great community.
    And pat and J9,
Your programming is the best I’ve seen on all the blogs I go to. If you weren’t at the event yesterday the final scores (due to their scoring system) did not truly represent how dominating the shed was. We were all beasts and it was awesome to be part of it. Not to take anything away from the other athletes but it felt like we walked in and started taking names and kicking ass. I saw a lot of the people there looking at our athletes with their mouths open in amassment. Redshed rocks

  121. not sure if we got pictures of it, but when J9 came in from the run on wod 4 she had this calm collective walk while checking her watch for her run time from outside to her ambit. I remember thinking how menacing it must have been for her competitors to see. Reminded me of the terminator

  129. I think you meant to type “amazement”, DP.
I am happy that everyone had such a great experience yesterday. I tend to get pretty emotional when we represent so well. It is really a testament to your hard work, and it makes us feel pretty good!
There were 7 RedShed men in the competition (again, I am including Kevin in there)…. and there was only 1 non-shedhead in the top 8 at the conclusion of the event. If the scoring system was different, we would have had an all RedShed/CFWE final in the men’s event!
Rich, you did awesome!… be positive, brother!
DP, you smoked me on that first sprint… you had a great day!
McCoy, you are the king of the lake, brother!! That was so cool to witness!!
Scott, I know you don’t like to hear it… but YOU ARE THE MAN!! You have the unique ability to persevere under any circumstances, and that is very inspiring to everyone around you!
Brielle, you were born to CrossFit! Period!
Colleen, you also were born to CrossFit… and now you have a better idea of what you are capable of!
Mr. Brendan and Mr. Kevin, you guys are my all All-Stars… I will never take credit for your abilities, but I am so honored that you started your CF journey with us, and you choose to be part of our RedShed Family.
    Oh, and my lovely wife… (I think I married a cyborg!!!, 150 wallballs in a row??)…
no, really, at the risk of sounding like a flake… I cried when you got off that last rope climb. I am so, so proud of you and athletic accomplishments.
    And…
    to our entire RedShed Family…
I am so, so very proud to have you train with us. I am humbled and amazed by all of you each day. Together, we can change the world, one lifestyle at a time… YOU ROCK!
    Thank You

    Thank You

I am happy that everyone had such a great experience yesterday. I tend to get pretty emotional when we represent so well. It is really a testament to your hard work, and it makes us feel pretty good!
There were 7 RedShed men in the competition (again, I am including Kevin in there)…. and there was only 1 non-shedhead in the top 8 at the conclusion of the event. If the scoring system was different, we would have had an all RedShed/CFWE final in the men’s event!
Rich, you did awesome!… be positive, brother!

Good news! It looks like I got all the blood out of your high-sock.
Thanks very much. I don’t think I could have continued without it.

I noticed her check her watch, too. And I’m sure she was the only competitor cheering on other competitors while doing situps with a 20lb vest.
    Brielle
I remember looking at the clock and thinking “When the hell is this thing going to be over” more than once. Unfortunately, the way I feel today, its still not over.

  153. Brielle-
I busted out laughing reading about your calm look of DEATH…
The only thing this event was missing was a Shed-dominated podium photo finish.
With all the top 3 spots for the men and 2 of the 3 tops spots for women-how cool would have that been?
    Scott-
Glad that high sock worked for you-it looked pretty cool.
When the ab soreness sets in (and it will), I think it is going to be pretty painful!
