03.13.2011-Sunday-Rest Day

The ranting of a CrossFit addict…

Addressing some questions regarding the nutrition challenge:

1) Honey, Agave, Cane juice etc. are all SUGAR, and are worth -1 point (that's minus one!)  Remember the objective is to avoid sugar!

2) Limit your fruit intake please, and read the labels of your dried fruit.  Any added sugar or preservatives is -1.

3) Chewing gum is allowed, but only two pieces of gum per day.  Anything more than that is a 1/2 point deduction.

4) Fruit juice must be 100% juice with no preservatives, 8 ounces per day only.

I think I may have addressed other issues at the shed.  If you think you shouldn't eat it… DON'T! & feel free to email me with questions or post them in the blog comments.  Remember, there will be penalties for points coming in under 38/week.

When in doubt, refer to Download Whole30version3.0

Have an awesome Sunday!!

  1. CFE Results:
    12×1 minute intervals/30 second recovery
    12x200m sprints/30 second recovery
    C2:
    Pat-3322m
    Brielle-3306m
    Run:
    J9-14:37
used a distance somewhere between 200-250m and realized later when I added up the time that I only did 11 intervals (think it was the over excitement of the new shoes)
So, as SvW would say…this is not rx, but MODIFIED!

  9. Thanks all for your suggestions yesterday (and patience!) while Tonya and I figured out what the hell we were doing for our first partner WOD. Especially Janice for jumping in to put our marks up–you’d think with all our time strategizing we’d have done that! 🙂
??–Rob Wolf’s book lists Tamari (wheat free soy sauce)on shopping list. It still has soy so seems to contradict. Verdict??
    thanks guys!

  17. Jess-I’m finding A LOT of contradicting stuff on this Paleo thing. Recipes with honey, sites that say dairy is ok…I would guess if you can live without it, then skip it.
Out of the McCoy kitchen so far: egg muffins w/ zucchini, spinach, peppers, and green onions, salmon cakes w/ homemade ginger mayo, and spaghetti squash w/ homemade tomato sauce. Also on the menu this week-portobello pizzas! Coconut milk is good in coffee and tea! And I’m so happy I can have gum-helps to keep my sweet tooth in check. I think I will be making up a lot of penalty points this week, but going forward will be better.

Not sure what the official Larabar ruling is, but I say “yes”. I eat the cashew cookie ones all the time. They’re just dates and cashews. Just gotta try and keep ’em to a minimum ’cause dates are very sweet.

  33. Good to see y’all discussing nutrition.
When in doubt, skip it and eat something you know is good.
2-3 servings of fruit is plenty, and save the bananas for post wod only. Some citrus is ok, and the best fruits are berries.
Avoid soy and dairy if you can. If not, choose the best quality possible, preferrably organic.
    Marc, your assumption is correct.
As for meat, try to avoid sausages and all processed meats if possible. If you are going with bacon and sausages, make sure they are nitrate free and have no sugar or preservatives.
We will be treating post WOD shakes the same as coffee creamer… deduct 1/2 point for each shake… unless there are NO SUGARS of any kind in the ingredients.
Legumes (beans and peas) peanuts are not good.
As you are aware, Paleo is painted with a very broad brush. Our nutrition challenge is pretty simple, so don’t overthink it. Go with your gut feeling about your choices, and be honorable when scoring your daily points. Don’t be afraid to start a food log to help you keep track of your points.
Please feel free to keep asking questions, and swapping recipes.
The Neill kitchen is now closed until dinner time. We made all our meals for the week, including homemade larabars for snacks! Can’t believe we got it all done before 3PM!!

  41. First of all…did anyone catch DP’s post yesterday giving spelling advice? Rock On!
As Pat said, there are many variations on paleo eating out there. For our purposes, grains and dairy are out.
Read your recipes and ingredient labels carefully.
Don’t overdo fruit, especially dried fruit, focus more on veggies.
Ahhhh the larabar craze…a good choice on a snack, but like anything else, in moderation. Homemade larabar recipe should be in the comments of the paleo section.

  49. Ok tonight was a test of my commitment! Traditional Italian Sunday dinner. Family ate Sunday sause and pasta. Ro had spagetti squash with my homemade sauce. Was actually tasty. Thought I was going to have a real problem with it but was pleasantly surprised. Additionally had salad with Scott’s dressing recipe revised: walnut oil with fresh lemon juice, oregano, basil, a little garlic powder, almost a lemon vinagrette but very tasty. No wine in my sauce was still very good. Had pork instead of meatballs and sausage as my famly did. Great success today. Feeling good.
