Race nutrition is personal and starts with your regular diet and race morning breakfast. Gels upset my stomach. Some people can’t eat solid foods while running. Testing nutrition in training is highly recommended.
Someone on a typical western diet does well with sugar and should have a gel every 30-60 min during activity. Many of them have a light breakfast and take the first gel just before the start.
The CFE guys say you can go 90 minutes with nothing but water if you had a good paleo breakfast. I made it 80 min before feeling it when I tested this theory. For anything longer, they suggest sticking with paleo foods.
I’ve made paste from pureed veggies, nuts, and oil with good performance results. I’m still working on taste and trying to make them in bar form. I’d give you a recipe if I had a good one.
