"TIME!"

Go to any CrossFit gym, and that is what you will hear multiple times within any given hour.

"TIME!"

As a casual observer, you could conclude that "time" is what motivates us… the CrossFitters.  "Points" and "Scores" are how we size ourselves up against others in the gym, and around the world (hence the CF Games)… Coach Glassman himself is known for the saying, "men will die for points", and it is true!

The question I have as a Coach, and someone who takes pride in the quality of movement, is this… Is something getting sacrificed for time, points and/or scores?

At times, are we missing the bigger picture of "increased work capacity over broad time and modal domains"?  Is having the "fastest" time more important than your measurable results or the quality of your movement within any given WOD?  Would you short hip your squats, or do shallow dips just to "win" your heat for the workout of the day?  Would you sandbag your strength session to ensure a faster metcon time?

The nature of our sport promotes competition… against others and within yourself.  The nature of our positions as Coaches is to nurture both without losing site of the other.

Our goal is to improve you… all aspects of you, and we will do that at the expense of time, points and scores!.

What are your goals?

Yours in Fitness,

CPJ

  19. Thanks for that, Pat.
Goals as a coach: To continue to introduce people from all walks of life into a lifestyle of fitness and health safely, efficiently, and with confidence on both ends. Also to continue my education, keep an open mind, and translate all that I learn from my coaches and my education to my training & coaching. Also to never lose sight of what RedShed is about.
Goals as an athlete: To push myself everyday and give my very best in everything that I am doing, to learn everyday from our athletes and coaches, and mainly, to practice what I preach!
Hope the runs went well, but my body said to rest.

  20. Thanks for that, Pat.

  28. Awesome words Pat!!!
Loved running with everyone today. And I am so proud of the kiddies! That was Jack’s first 5K so I wasn’t sure how it would go over, but he did great. Kids are just amazing! Seriously brought tears to my eyes when his name was called for an award because he was so excited and proud of himself. He said he would do another race but only with “shed people”. How cute

  37. Even though my run was slower today, it was much better than last year because I had my fellow shed heads with me to share in the misery and pain of running.
Great job to all shed heads today.
I feel like I ran 8 miles today and I think it might take a while to recover, but the cause is worth it.

  42. Even though my run was slower today, it was much better than last year because I had my fellow shed heads with me to share in the misery and pain of running.
Great job to all shed heads today.
I feel like I ran 8 miles today and I think it might take a while to recover, but the cause is worth it.

  46. +1 on slowness, but what WAS awesome is the power of CrossFit training to launch you up those hills…I bet that is where ShedHeads passed the most runners.
I will admit though that I walked at least one of those last hills.
And Steve not only CHOSE the wrench, he SHATTERED it into many pieces, taking off and never looking back!
