Open gym is full for tonight and there is no wait list option. Does this mean I can’t go?

McShawn – Don’t know if this helps or not, but I just canceled my 5:30. I had to go to another job early and didn’t pack my gym stuff. We also decided to have lacrosse practice again, but the rain my wash that out.

Clearly, somebody was desperate for picture material today, or they had the same revelation that I did yesterday. I skimmed through my notebook and noticed that 4/3/12 was one of my first RedShed workouts. Happy Anniversary to me!
Since the Open wrapped up, I’ve been thinking a lot about where I am in the whole Crossfit journey thing and what to do to improve. After looking at my notes yesterday, I got to thinking about what has happened over the past year…here are some rambling thoughts…you may want to skip to the next post:
– In the past year, I finally picked up HSPU, DU’s, and am getting more proficient with the Olympic lifts. When I started, they were ugly and there’s still a long way to go. Maybe I’ll have muscle ups by year 4.
– On what I’ll call my anniversary, I PR’d my snatch and my squat is back up where it was 20 years ago. It’s nice to see the improvement in my scores, but that’s nothing like seeing the improvement that everyone else has been making. A lot of people think whiteboarding/leaderboarding is bad, but I find it highly motivating.
– I took the plunge and Lift for Lungs was my first competition. I had my head handed to me but at the end I realized there is always somebody who did worse than you. Look for the little victories and learn from your failures.
– I had a great time with Amy, Carrie, and Pete at Test Your Metal and my only disappointment of the year came at Master’s of the Shed. With all of the 20 and 30 year olds out of the way, I thought I would place much higher than I did. Oh well, I’m still a work in progress.
– As I look back on this year’s Open, my numbers are where I was hoping to be and it’s nice to see where I stand versus other people. Who doesn’t like beating Bob Harper or Pat Sherwood’s scores (I need to check again, but I think I beat Harper in the Open…Sherwood must have bombed the WOD I outscored him in). I love Dave Castro’s Open WOD’s, but I wish he would stay off the announcements…he drives me up the wall. I’m curious to see where things will end up with Crossfit the lifestyle as we practice it versus Crossfit the sport. I prefer the grass roots amateur version we have now.
– I think talking about “community” sounds cheesy, but it is hard to express how much all of the people and the Shed experience mean to me. My life revolves around work and family activities. You guys are 90% of my social life and I’m amazed at some of the connections I’ve been able to make. Who knew that there were so many gun nuts around and where else can you find a woman who eats venison (and likes it).
– At the beginning of the year, I made a list of Crossfit related goals. I’m doing reasonably well in meeting those goals so far. I’m excited for a kids program to get up and running, and if I’m lucky, I’ll get Kim back to the Shed.
Anyway, I wanted to let all of you know how thankful I am to have you around, for the Coaches, and the Shed.

Good stuff Chris! Just wanted to say how proud I am to see oly paying off for many of you! Getting stronger and more consistent in your lifts are showing through with the awesome PRs I saw yesterday! Keep it up all!

Chris, great read and there was NO way I was skipping to the other posts. You are an inspiration to all of us and may not know this, but your greeting one evening of my acknowledgement into the shed by saying hi as a newbie made me at ease that night and your words of encouragement while I was running, gave me a little bit more of ambition to forge on. April 2013, I completed BT and I forged on almost one year. Thanks Chris!

Chris – you neglected to mention how you’ve become a total “meat titan” since joining the Shed. I mean, when you achieve “freak beast” status like me then you get to use cool monikers to describe yourself.
