The season began on the cold wind swept Passaic River. A group of 8-10 girls training hard, fighting for spots in the Junior 8. Early in the season the Junior 8 was a competitive boat in several Regattas held in Philadelphia.
Midway thru the season this boat was broken up into two Junior 4’s. One of the Junior 4’s exceeded all expectations, the rowers meshed, the training became more intense, they began to achieve success, finishing second in the prestigious Stotesbury Regatta.
The rowers enjoyed the new found success, became more determined to improve their finish in their next challenge, the Nationals in Virginia. Facing quality opponents, the team enjoyed the magical ride thru preliminary races to reach the finals. A close wire to wire race in the finals led to the Lady Kards being crowned National Champions.
A season ending Invitational Regatta in Canada with a second place finish completed a memorable Spring season for a team coached by Tom Haberthur. The winning four was comprised of Valerie Balogh, Dawn DaSilva, Jennifer Dore Terhaar, Joanne Leonardis and Melanie Lombardo-Palen.
