During the mid-winter months, I have adopted "aerobic flow" days (or mentality) to my training… it's nothing too difficult, but it allows for some good sweating, focus and reflection. As I age, it feels good to just get the blood to flow, and focus on breathing and "feeling good" in a longer time domain.
During some of my aerobic flow sessions, I get the opportunity to think about training, programming, testing etc. I also think a lot about how to just "get better", and what I can do to help create that for every athlete that trains at the shed, or comes to me for programming, nutritional guidance or training knowledge. Honestly, it doesn't just end with the programming… there's more to it than that!!
In the picture above I hung the weighted vest and my chain on the handle of my good buddy, and wanted to share an idea… a thought… a message.
On my chain there are 3 things… 1) the cross that represents my Faith 2) a tag that reads "weakness is a choice", and 3) a tag that simply reads "LOVE".
Often, with about every workout or training session I put myself through, my chain rattles around, comes out from under my shirt, and presents itself as quite a nuisance at times… but I don't remove it. I use it as a sign… a reminder that:
I have a choice to work hard… or make excuses.
I can choose love… or not
I can choose to keep the faith… or not
And these choices don't just help me in the gym… they help me in everyday situations, like when my daughters need a loving father… when my wife needs a husband who listens… when my clients need a coach who cares… when the gym needs to be mopped and the bathrooms need to be cleaned.
The message here is that you have a choice! When you choose to throw good to the Universe, it will throw good right back to you… often times 10-fold!

What's
Important
Now
(stole that one from Lou Holtz!)
When I am doing burpees or double unders and I hear my tags clanging around, I remember to focus on what's important now, and go for the win!
If you find yourself struggling with finding the win, or feeling the love in your training (or in whatever!), remember that like attracts like, and dislike attracts dislike… if you hate burpees, you can bet they sure as hell are gonna hate you right back… and then some! If you hate your food… you won't absorb their nutrients. If you hate your bed… you won't get the sleep you need for growth, recovery and inflammation control (restful sleep is a great anti-inflammatory!).
It's your choice! Go for the win!
