Information Overload
Do you remember the KISS principle? (keep it simple, stupid!) I can
remember one of my math teachers in high school writing that on the
chalkboard every week, and I would think to myself, “how can you make
calculus simple… or am I just stupid?”
I like to take time to reflect each week. Many times I realize that I have
way too much going on in my life, and something doesn’t get the attention
it deserves. Thankfully, my training has provided me with the ability to
be more aware of myself and my surroundings, relationships etc., so I can
reel myself in and try to apply the KISS principle.
How does this apply to you and the RedShed?
Inside the four walls of the RedShed, there is a strange sense of an almost
chaotic serenity. Even though you are about to load up the barbell, you
are about to unload a ton of stress. Even though the WOD has your nemesis
in it, it’s all good… it is not a deadline or a bill that is past due. I
have news for you, shedheads…. The pull-up bar, the rings and the jump
ropes don’t care what happened to you at work today, or how much you
dislike sitting in meetings. But they do care about you getting those
pull-ups or ring dips or double unders unbroken. Inside the shed, you get
to be you… the real you, free from the stressors of the world (for at least
a little while)… and you cannot get simpler than that!
Now apply it to your WOD…
Approach the barbell with one coaching cue in your head, not 3 or 4.
When you over think your lift, you leave something out (refer to second
paragraph)… perhaps you pull too early, or don’t take the time to build the
hang…. When you think too much, something doesn’t get the attention it
deserves. Grab the bar and be an athlete!
Guess what running is…?
One foot in front of the other! Keep it that simple… run, and be an
athlete!
Spin the rope a little faster and jump a litter higher… grab the rope and
be an athlete!
Absorb that ball with your squat, and use the squat to throw that ball…
grab the wall ball and be an athlete!
When you enter the shed, you no longer have to be the teacher, nurse,
professor, scientist, IT guy/gal, laborer or customer service
representative (please don’t be offended if your occupation is not
listed!). You don’t have to be the boss, return calls or put out fires.
When you enter the shed, YOU ARE AN ATHLETE!
When you are at that point in your WOD when it hurts, or self-doubt starts to creep…. apply the KISS principle and be an athlete!
