The Group Fitness Model has changed the landscape of the Fitness Industry dramatically over the past decade… where we see things now that didn't necessarily exist before; like CrossFit, OCR Training Classes, HIT, and variations of Yoga and Spin that are more intense than they are effective!
As a Fitness Professional, it's important to be open to all fitness endeavors… different things appeal to different people, and that's ok… personally, I just feel happy when people find out what works for them! I am not in business to denounce anyone's pursuit of happiness through movement, dance, or whatever makes that person feel good.
With that said, in our current Group Fitness Model, there is almost an equal combination of eagerness to learn and grow, alongside entitlement, instant gratification and "I watched this video on YouTube, so I know more than you"…
When people seek out a professional to perform a service, but then bully or dictate the service protocol to the "professional"… there becomes a clear disconnect in the message of services.
We can make the wires touch when the focus moves away from "what's in it for me"… and moves closer to developing relationships and honest communication.
Being a Fitness Coach in a group model is challenging in the sense that you have 100 different people with 100 different personalities who cannot be spoken to exactly the same way… because feelings get hurt, knowledge bases are different, perception and context gets skewed… along with a plethora of other reasons! Because of these things… and because of a society that wants things now, or yesterday… we get the pursuit of individual coaching or programming. Again, "what's in it for me"… "I need more, and I needed it yesterday"
For a moment, let's take a look a this from a biological perspective… it takes 9 months for a human being to develop inside another human being before being born… it takes another 9-12 months for that human to learn how to walk… and another 9-24 months to learn how to communicate… see a pattern here??
Physiological/biological change takes time…
So why are you in such a rush master "CrossFit"?
The reality of starting something new and seeing dramatic change is real… but it's a false reality for long term growth, behavior change, and longevity… that stuff truly takes time… and a team!
Developing that team also takes time and the willingness to develop relationships… and THAT is where the best coaches differentiate themselves, and stand out as the shepherd among the herd of sheep.
Without sitting down and asking questions, demanding answers and identifying strategies and compromises, the road map to your goals is a map to nowhere! It's a wild goose chase that leads to frustration, injuries and mental ambiguity towards your training. The Coach-to-Athlete relationship is vital in this goal setting endeavor, but it takes time, it's uncomfortable sometimes, and it takes a lot of work and commitment on both ends… and I think that's why we see a lot of injuries and lack of commitment to long term goals in the "box" arena.
So let's end this with the not-so-simple question listed as the title of this post… "what's your why?"
Why do you train?
Why do you pursue a particular coach or program?
Are you willing to develop the right relationships to build the team you need to get to your WHY?
RedShed Coaches are here to be part of your team… to work with you in establishing the right relationships. So do your due diligence on your end… find that one coach (or 2) that will hold you accountable, and ultimately map out your path to long term success.
Each of our Coaches are experts, and have their own unique skill sets that make our team incredibly effective! In case you need a reminder… Steve, Brielle, Doug, Colin, Scott, Shawn, Kate, Janine and CPJ. We are here for you… so talk with us, learn from us, grow with us!!
This is a great post. Always enjoy reading these…
Always love these posts. As for me, my why started 2 years ago when I realized I was too big to fit on a ride at Dorney Park. I promised that when my kids were big enough to go on it, I would be small enough. After losing nearly 100lbs I rode that ride this summer with my 9 yr old daughter. Now my why is to inspire my kids and to become the best version of myself.
